Part I argues that risk made us, and this is the claim most likely to be attacked. Its position: evolution, whether individual or cultural, requires variation and selection of the fittest, and without extinction, the pruning of genetics, ideas or governance structures, there can be no progress. Collective risks destroyed societies that could not organise themselves, letting those that could thrive and spread. Viewed individually these were traumas that wrecked families; viewed at species scale they were a grindstone. The argument is used to justify attention to risk, not to welcome it, but as written it licenses more than Part I intends.

Efficiency spread everywhere because it serves any purpose. Part I: Taylorism never much respected the old left-right divide or barriers between industries or political systems, and its ideas were embraced by Mussolini, Hitler, Lenin and the Japanese military elite as eagerly as by the liberal democracies, if not more so. Disparate and diametrically opposed leaders found efficiency a useful proximate goal whatever their ultimate ends. A capability that serves every end selects for nothing, so its spread tells you about its portability and nothing about its direction.

Craft pride stopped knowledge moving. Each worker learned his own method over a long apprenticeship, so no two worked by the same rules of thumb, and because the work was seen as an art rather than a job, men kept their methods secret and believed them superior. Part I's conclusion: these organisational practices precluded efficient transmission of knowledge and skill, making it harder to improve at a craft or pick one up at all. The knowledge existed and could not travel.

Our picture of the world described our machines, not the world. Part I argues we built a vision of a clockwork, deterministic universe that was predictable and controllable with enough understanding, applied its linear thinking to our industries and organisations, and mistook the result for reality. The world looked linear because our own constructs made it so, so the worldview had more to do with our systems at the time than with our underlying reality. It survives now because it was once accurate about what we had built.

Common sense is like oxygen: the higher you go, the thinner it gets. Seniority and breadth of view degrade the faculty they most require, so the roles with the widest remit are the ones most in need of external correction.

Human reasoning deviates from rationality in systematic, predictable and repeatable patterns rather than through random error.

The success of Enlightenment institutions produced a world complex enough to expose the falsity of their own premise, so the model is failing through its achievements rather than through external shock.

Individual human cognitive capacity has not materially changed over 300,000 years while collective capability has grown explosively, so growth in civilisational capability is attributable to accumulation and coordination rather than to improvement in individuals.

Three centuries of institutional design, across markets, democracy, science and liberal individualism, rest on a shared model of the human being as a rational individual whose informed judgement converges on truth.

The rational-individual model was a productive fiction: institutions built on a false premise nonetheless produced three centuries of genuine advance, so any replacement framework must account for that success rather than treat it as simple error.

The apparatus of the scientific method is a scaffold constructed to compensate for the systematic failures of individual human reasoning, not a demonstration of its reliability.

Specialization is humanity's master strategy but it works only while the environment is large relative to capabilities. That ratio has inverted.

A metanarrative IS a memeplex: a co-adapted complex of memes that survive better together than alone. Blackmore shows that memeplexes use specific mechanisms to maintain themselves - untestability, faith demands, altruism tricks, truth tricks, and fear-forgiveness pairing. Understanding the centaur religion as a deliberately designed memeplex means engineering which of these mechanisms to keep (altruism trick, truth-seeking) and which to reject (untestability, faith demands) while maintaining the self-reinforcing structure that makes memeplexes durable.

Every social constellation necessarily defines an out-group. This creates an unresolved tension with centaur-religion (LEO-C01): either centaur-religion accepts it will have an out-group, functions as a meta-constellation for constellations to interact rather than a constellation itself, or demonstrates that the structural necessity of boundaries is wrong. The closest historical parallels for boundary-minimal constellations - Hellenistic cosmopolitanism, Enlightenment universalism, scientific community norms - all either developed de facto boundaries or dissolved.

The meaning crisis is a structural side effect of specialization, not a cultural complaint. Disconnection between effort and visible result generates epidemiologically measurable harm: rising depression, suicide, and deaths of despair. Any orientation system that ignores this structural cause will fail.
