Detaching value from biology converted evolution into a faster search, and this is the mechanism behind everything the collective works on. Other species must wait for evolution to motivate a new behaviour through trial and error on genes. By inventing cultures and imagined realities we drastically widened the range of actions people could find valuable, and selection then operated on those: some ideas produced seriously maladaptive behaviour and harmed the people who held them, while others let tribes act cohesively and adaptively, so the group and its ideas spread. Part I's conclusion is that a flexible conception of value enabled evolutionary and selective pressures to select for better ideas and imagined realities over time, supercharging our tribes and our pace of development. The substrate of selection moved from bodies to beliefs, and beliefs turn over faster.
