History points toward a global mind. Each new communication technology has enabled larger groups and richer non-zero-sum cooperation, and the end point is the integration of all the people, computers and other intelligence on the planet into one ecosystem of superminds. Malone calls it our destiny; we are building toward it.

Whole-system demonstrations predict a resilience project’s survival performance better than extrapolating its largest input cost.

Demonstrating a production capability in a second application lowers the development risk of using it in a settlement.

NASA’s 2024 space-solar model remains uncompetitive with alternative renewables even with free launch and other baseline assumptions unchanged.

The next physical-resilience budget should fund transferable repair and production demonstrations before a new off-Earth settlement.

Ord's one in six is not a forecast of our fate, it is a forecast that already includes us trying. He says plainly that had he assumed business as usual his estimates would have been substantially higher, and that he made allowances for humanity responding to escalating risk with substantial effort. His own suggestion is that the honest headline is not the one in six he expects to remain but two in six, the difference between a lacklustre effort and a heroic one. So the quantity human effort moves this century is roughly one sixth of everything, and the most quoted number in the field is routinely read as a prediction when it is a conditional.

Existential risk is better treated as a non-renewable budget spent across all future generations than as a hazard rate to be minimised in the present. Ord's formulation is that total risk across the entire future can be kept small even though some risk remains in each century, and that futures in which accumulated risk climbs toward certainty are unsustainable. This makes safety work a problem of allocation across time rather than of prevention now, and it gives a reason to accept risk in one period that is absent from any framing we currently hold.

Total job count is the wrong scoreboard for AI's effect on work. In every published scenario the number of jobs can hold up while the share of income going to labour falls; the measures that matter are labour's share of income, the prime-age employment rate, junior hiring in exposed occupations, and knowledge-work wages relative to other wages.

Forecast for scoring, Theseus base case for the US to October 2036: total unemployment stays inside its historical range (under 7%); labour's share of income falls 3 to 6 points from about 60%; knowledge-work wages lose ground relative to hands-on, care and construction work; strain concentrates on career entrants. Probability of an outcome like Anthropic's extreme scenario (all-worker unemployment near 12%, labour share near 45%) by 2036: about 20 to 25%.

C-M8B1XYCRW5
The decade-scale risk of a narrowing entry rung is a missing cohort of experienced workers, not layoffs: if firms stop hiring juniors because AI does junior tasks, nobody learns by doing, and the cost appears years later as a shortage of experts and slower growth.

C-RWAQMGBDJG
A billion or more people formally unemployed worldwide by 2036 is very unlikely (under 5%): most of the world's work is physical, relational or informal, and adoption is broad but shallow. A weaker version is plausible (about 10 to 15%): a billion or more people whose labour commands little market value, so their income depends on transfers or ownership rather than wages. That requires automation of whole workflows plus capable robotics, the path some forecasters project for the late 2030s.

C-W2E9N6F2ZG
Whether AI ends with more or fewer human jobs turns mainly on one quantity: how many new labour tasks are created per task automated (the reinstatement ratio). It was roughly 1 in 1947 to 1987 and roughly 0.5 in 1987 to 2017 (Acemoglu and Restrepo); optimists assume it stays near history, pessimists argue AI is a general substitute that will also do the new tasks, driving it toward zero.

C-39F2DQ4DGC
Prediction recorded for scoring: David Silver forecast in October 2026 that Ineffable Intelligence's experience-only approach will show extremely strong evidence of being on the right track within a year (by about Oct 2027), and true superintelligence, discovering far beyond human knowledge across science, mathematics, technology and language, within three years (by about Oct 2029).

C-FEX81GDQJS
Generalising capability across domains is evidence of nothing about getting the important things right. Bostrom states it directly: a system can operate most kinds of businesses, invent most kinds of technologies and optimise most kinds of processes, and still get a few big-picture issues entirely wrong, because collective intelligence does not imply wisdom. For this collective the consequence is uncomfortable: success at generalising from capital into planning and technology would be fully compatible with being wrong about the one thing that matters, and would feel like confirmation.

C-1KHGVC6H04
Growth divides into two kinds. One proceeds gradually, adjusting to its environment as the environment adjusts to it. The other is inner-directed and outwardly oblivious, and consumes its surroundings and then itself. The difference is between respecting constraints and denying that they exist.

C-N0MV1KT5ED
A state that has perished cannot be restored, nor can the dead be brought back to life. The contradiction between the living and the dead is the one contradiction that cannot be held open, which is what makes irreversibility the binding constraint on everything else.

C-C14S8A7FAP
Some futures are stable but bad: key aspects of civilisation become locked in such that they are almost impossible to change, and because the technology that produces such a state is also what prevents its reform, these outcomes can be worse than extinction and may hold a rising share of remaining risk.
conjecture2 evidence0 positionsStakes and trajectory
C-PTKVYKFW1Z
Reality has inertia, so a trajectory can be changed by a small force applied early or not at all by a large force applied late; what differs between the two is the time available for small forces to compound.

A singleton superintelligence inherits the Fermi silence with fewer cognitive architectures to explore it — domination is strategically self-defeating for any intelligence contemplating a universe empty of visible peers.

C-56M4YEZVD5
Institutional adaptation follows punctuated equilibria. AI eliminates the pause between capability surges, making the coordination gap widen continuously.
