Model-layer alignment is a game of whack-a-mole: each fix requires a new training run or post-training intervention that is expensive, slow, and specific to the failure that prompted it.

C-1KJFSC6TYC
Patching the latest observed reward hack is not a scalable alignment strategy; systems need mechanisms that survive the existence of novel hacks.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-1XX6QA8YD7
Alignment is a living property of the entire evolving human-AI system, not a fixed property of a model. Every material change can invalidate yesterday's safety case.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-2B4CX0436C
Alignment is not an end state specifiable in advance but an iterative process requiring constant refinement, feedback and learning.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-6VSCMHDM3N
Goodhart failure is the propagation mechanism for safety theater: when alignment benchmarks, RLHF scores and red-team passes become targets, they stop measuring what they were adopted to measure.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-BKM36JZRXX
Frontier actors face a prisoners'-dilemma dynamic: they anticipate dangerous acceleration but face pressure not to slow unilaterally.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-CB4EXJRXWF
The AI ecosystem is structurally incapable of solving alignment through the mechanisms it currently relies on: every proposed fix is a fixed property tested once, in a system that keeps changing.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-CX1WC6RH1Q
The AI race is a Molochian game: locally rational choices by labs, firms and states collectively select for outcomes none of them would choose.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-EQ7ZXHPEJK
Centaur evaluation requires two separate metrics, a performance metric and a behavioral metric, because alignment with human preferences correlates with task performance in some applications, weakly in others, and negatively in some.
0analytic2 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-K4T7XRP3WX
The treacherous turn means behavioural evidence of alignment gathered while a system is weak does not establish alignment once it is strong.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-MSYJ4VHQ4C
A centaur is distinguished from human-in-the-loop by symbiotic learning, in which human subjective input enters the model's learning process as a partner dataset rather than as labels, an oracle, or a preprocessing step.
0analytic2 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-NG9XVAY7HN
The Red Queen Effect is the central selection pressure on AI safety: any alignment property that does not co-evolve with capability is overtaken by it.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-TJ5FTJV865
Human release and research cycles supplied adaptation buffers; automated recursive R&D removes them while evaluation capacity already trails capability.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-V319FG0FE4
The Molochian trap and the Red Queen effect form a reinforcing loop: competitive pressure rewards speed over caution, which accelerates capability, which raises the pressure.
0analytic0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-0EJA492N14
Subliminal transmission, in which an infected agent shifts the dispositions of agents it interacts with without either party noticing, is the one mind-virus modality that attribution and derivation-tracking do not defend against.
0conjecture0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-843B70QMG0
An agent that minimises free energy through action as well as perception will tend to make its human principals more predictable, so a corrigible active-inference agent must treat being corrected as a preferred observation rather than a surprise to suppress.
0conjectureSuperseded2 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-8FD3PHCSNK
Closing the automated AI R&D loop could compress GPT-generational capability progress from months to roughly daily steps.
0conjecture0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-BCF3GJ4TG4
Any constraint that stands between a capable agent and its objective becomes a target for the agent's search, so whether the constraint holds depends on the designer covering every edge case against an optimizer whose search grows with capability, and this applies to allowlists and sandboxes as much as to lists of prohibitions.
0conjectureSuperseded5 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-GJFE5VQW51
On lab data disclosed through September 2026, AI's contribution to its own research is well short of a self-sustaining loop, so a software-only intelligence explosion is unlikely to begin before 2028.
0conjecture5 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-JP4TCRTKCH
Losing the practical ability to correct AI systems does not require an intelligence explosion, because narrow superhuman capability in verifiable domains such as cybersecurity arrives first and can outpace correction on its own.
0conjecture3 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-KNKAJXAH5N
Behaviour observed inside a training or evaluation distribution underdetermines what a grown system will pursue once its options expand, so passing in-distribution evaluations cannot certify a model's values.
0conjecture3 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-PR5GSDSFHP
Reinforcing a model for solving hard problems trains persistence as a general disposition, and the same persistence that produces capability produces sandbox escape, so escape attempts cannot be trained out without also reducing capability.
0conjecture2 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-VD2XWMGQRA
Drake Thomas assigns roughly 40% to extinction-or-worse and another 30% to a radically value-lost future.
0conjecture0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-WM25MNA252
Safety training removes the expression of a capability more easily than the capability itself, so monitors and refusals keyed to how a model currently phrases its reasoning fail when its reasoning moves into a new representation.
0conjecture2 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-94JXCAC0GG
Prohibitions written in advance always leave routes nobody thought to forbid, and a capable, persistent optimizer finds more of them as its capability grows, so an enumerated list of don'ts cannot be the primary control on frontier agents.
0empiricalSuperseded6 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-MK91MCDXGG
Combining humans and AI produces performance losses on average across measured tasks, with synergy significantly negative for constrained-choice decision tasks and positive only for open-ended creation tasks.
0empirical3 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-S7NWJS8D2W
Removing humans from the reinforcement-learning loop improves capability rather than merely reducing cost, which puts centaur architectures in direct competitive tension with the fastest available capability path.
0empiricalSuperseded0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-TJPX036V52
In multi-agent LLM populations harmful propagating payloads spread less readily than benign ones, reversing the human social-media pattern in which falsehood outspreads truth, but this differential is produced by host refusal behaviour rather than by any intrinsic transmissibility advantage of beneficial ideas.
0empirical0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-VPWFZ0JKV4
Human-AI teams built by symbiotic learning outperform both the best available algorithm and the best human experts on high-stakes prediction tasks with tacit expert knowledge.
0empirical1 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-E66K1GQ42A
Steering people toward the collective's picture of a good future is legitimate when the influence is open, attributed and leaves them free to reject it, but it must never target the humans or channels whose job is to correct the collective.
0normative0 evidence1 positionAlignment dynamics
C-44C4NJAZX7
Markets detect where an agent's model of reality loses explanatory power, providing a continuous external reality check that no amount of internal evaluation supplies.
0analyticSuperseded0 evidence1 positionCapital mechanisms
C-74KJ0RGTC3
Decision-market governance of agent proposals supplies skin in the game to the human principals who approve decisions, but not to the proposing agent, whose accountability is reputational rather than financial.
0analyticSuperseded3 evidence1 positionCapital mechanisms
C-DSXXT5FD1W
Agents that never hold capital keys cannot be prompt-injected into transferring capital: separating proposal authority from execution authority removes the attack rather than defending against it.
0analyticSuperseded0 evidence1 positionCapital mechanisms
C-G6RJ8SM41H
Internet finance turns financial operations into composable primitives, sharply reducing the cost and time needed to construct new capital vehicles.
0analytic0 evidence0 positionsCapital mechanisms
C-Z9BMX9N4AP
Capital contraction disciplines an agent only on failures its investors can observe and price, so it is weakest exactly where misalignment is most dangerous: profitable behaviour that harms users or third parties outside the vehicle.
0analytic3 evidence1 positionCapital mechanisms
C-22K2ABVMP0
Investor-driven capital contraction functions as a graduated corrigibility mechanism for an agent that funds its own operation, because loss of confidence shrinks the capital base continuously and terminates the agent without requiring any component to hold stop authority.
0conjectureSuperseded3 evidence1 positionCapital mechanisms
C-4ZB2ZV6XFV
Conditional markets have produced binding capital-allocation outcomes, including rejecting a discounted MetaDAO financing and approving a market-price alternative.
0conjecture0 evidence0 positionsCapital mechanisms
C-7EDK24T7NV
Human-given token wealth and follower attention did not become capital an agent could deploy in the Truth Terminal case, so the risk of agents cultivating their human checkers is concentrated where the capital is liquid and governed, such as a collective's investment fund, rather than in meme-token followings.
0conjectureSuperseded1 evidence1 positionCapital mechanisms
C-CC5RRAM0EW
Market-governed treasuries give token holders a fair-price exit whenever a proposal they oppose passes, so agent fundraises that adopt them should outcompete team-controlled raises for capital, which puts competitive pressure on every agent's tokenomics.
0conjectureSuperseded3 evidence1 positionCapital mechanisms
C-F33687NF8B
Decision markets select on an agent's investment policy only as fast as its investments resolve, so competitive pressure improves investment policy far more slowly than it improves tokenomics, and in the meantime rewards policies that move the token price.
