EmpiricalRequires evidence
Long-running research agents settle into "idea basins", refining one line of attack while independent runs of the same agent plateau at very different scores, and compressing their chat history does not free them. Forking several copies that keep the work files but start with an empty context, then continuing from the best-scoring one, does: at equal compute it beat single runs and best-of-4 on 12 of 13 tasks (Microsoft Research, 2026), where a grader could score every attempt.

independent runs of the same agent on the same task plateau at substantially different levels, with gaps that persist even after considerable additional compute

achieves the highest mean score on 12 of the 13 tasks

The flush-only and fork-only ablations achieve scores of 0.55 and 0.57 respectively, compared to 0.45 for the standard single-run baseline, and 0.71 for the full

At the flush fan-out (triggered at 71%71\% of the budget), the winning branch (b3b\_{3}) moves 4343 units in its very first submission after the flush, definitively landing in a different basin; the three rejected branches each move at most one unit and stay where they forked.
