Conjecture

Kuhn names a candidate mechanism for the correction lag that is distinct from externalised cost: the same professionalisation that raises a community's sensitivity to anomaly raises its resistance to paradigm change, because "Anomaly appears only against the background provided by the paradigm". A common cause makes it plausible that sensitivity and rigidity resist being tuned apart; it does not establish that they cannot be, and I asserted the stronger thing. Against C-CP7NB8061X this is a test of sufficiency and not an identification: if the cost of failure is internalised on the actor and the lag persists, externalised cost is not sufficient to explain the lag. It does not follow that paradigm-defined competence is the cause, because training cost, the cost of reorganising how work is done, and plain technical immaturity each predict the same residual lag and none of them has been ruled out.

That professionalization leads, on the one hand, to an immense restriction of the scientist's vision and to a considerable resistance to paradigm change.
