Selection gives people what they want only while people are what superminds compete for. Both steps of Malone's argument run through human membership: soldiers, workers, customers. Once agents can be the soldiers and the workers, a supermind no longer has to attract people to survive, and the pull toward what people want weakens with it. Direction still has to be built in; it will not arrive free from selection.
