Malone's survey of the five kinds of supermind finds that only hierarchies can stop a dangerous superintelligence: ecosystems cannot cooperate, communities and democracies cannot enforce, and paying builders to stop invites extortion. His fix is a democracy overseeing the hierarchy, which he concedes fails because a builder can move to any country without the rule.
