Conjecture
A hierarchy is a supermind that mobilises many people to achieve the goals of whoever controls it, which makes it fast and decisive and makes its controllers' values decisive too. Cheap communication pushes the other way: when everyone can have the information, decisions move down to the people doing the work, who are more motivated, creative and flexible. Automated hierarchies keep humans at the top and at the exceptions.
