ConjectureSuperseded

The 2023 formulation says a system's blanket independencies follow from its sparse coupling; the 2021 counterexamples say sparse coupling alone does not give them.

The claim

Friston and co-authors (2023) describe the first step of the principle as establishing a partition from conditional independencies that inherit from sparsely coupled dynamics. Biehl, Pollock and Kanai (2021) give a linear, ergodic system with exactly that sparse coupling whose steady state does not factorise. Unless the 2023 paper adds conditions, its first step does not follow from sparse coupling alone.

T=4 L=85 above=The free-energy derivation leans on idealised noise: its gradient form needs Gaussian white noise, and its generalised coordinates need that noise to be differentiable, which it is not. below=On the free-energy view a living thing is 'self-evidencing': staying in its characteristic states maximises the evidence for the model it is. | The conditional holds and its antecedent is now known false: the 2023 paper does add solenoidal conditions.
