Conjecture

The ant task-allocation rule is a price signal, and recognising that is what makes the colony relevant to us rather than charming. An ant changes behaviour on the frequency and gradient of the pheromones it meets, and can sense the difference between encountering 10 or 100 foraging ants an hour: too many foragers and it switches task to avoid oversupply, and if an anteater removes three quarters of the foragers, ants on burial or brood duty meet too few and switch to foraging. No ant holds a census and no ant is told the colony's needs. Each one reads a local rate and acts, and the allocation comes out right. That is Hayek's man watching the movement of a few pointers, implemented in chemistry, and it is why Part I ends the section by saying value and markets play the role that pheromones play in a colony.

Conversely, if an anteater eats three fourths of the foraging ants of a colony, ants on burial duty or raising young will encounter too few forag
