Conjecture

The swarm works on the law of large numbers, and the condition attached to it is the whole game. Individual ants misread their samples and switch task wrongly, and at colony scale those errors wash out, making the system exceedingly accurate at delegating tasks, but Part I attaches the condition explicitly: provided the behavioural constraints of the ants are correctly calibrated. Scale corrects noise in the readings; it does nothing about a wrong rule. And in ants the calibration was set by millions of years of selection on colonies, not designed. Any human system built on this principle has to supply the calibration some other way, and that is the part the analogy does not hand us.

provided the behavioral constraints of the ants are correctly calibrated. This methodology allows ants to produce surprising sophisticated solutions to problems such as the policy they’ve evolved for building cemeteries and trash heaps. This strategy is showcased by the behavior of Gordon’s harves
