The aim is to understand the universe and to shepherd the diversity and beauty of life into the cosmos. Those are two aims and both are needed: understanding, because it would only be through beings capable of wondering that a part of the universe could come to comprehend the laws governing the whole; stewardship, because Ord argues humanity would be the only form of life capable of stewarding life itself, protecting it from natural catastrophes and eventually taking it to flourish beyond this planet. Stated this way the purpose is neither survival nor expansion. Survival is the precondition, expansion is a means, and carrying the diversity of life outward is what the capacity would be for.
