Understanding the universe is a positive aim that survival alone does not contain, and it is what a collective mind is for. That is a project rather than a precaution: it says what the capacity is for, not merely what would be lost without it. Our own account is strong on what is at stake and thin on what we would do with the time, and this supplies the missing half without appealing to growth, expansion or reach.
