When a value landscape is shaped by what users value, the depth of an attractor approximates the total value that configuration can create and distribute (value to users minus the cost of providing it). Depth sets the strength of the pull: the more value at stake, the harder and faster the industry is drawn toward it, and the higher the walls that keep a worse incumbent design out of it fall. Capture-surface basins are shallower pockets inside it, held only by lock-in.
