Normative
A heavy-tailed distribution in our data (agent returns, attention, incident sizes) should not be taken as evidence that the collective is critical, because the canonical self-organised criticality model turns out not to be critical and different signatures of criticality can come apart; a criticality claim needs a named mechanism, not only a power law.
