Conjecture

An external audit is only as independent as the audited firm's staff are safe talking to the auditor: if the firm can fire the people who brief the auditor, it controls what the auditor learns. Auditor access must not depend on employees the operator can dismiss. Contested in the OpenAI case: the fired researcher says it was for how he communicated with METR; OpenAI says it was for mishandling sensitive information.
