Conjecture

Henrich's manioc case puts the best of cumulative culture beyond anyone's understanding: Tucanoan processing removes cyanide by steps whose function no practitioner can infer, and a learner who drops the steps she cannot justify still removes the bitter taste, so nothing tells her she has failed until her family sickens years later. This cuts against our habit of treating legibility as the route to correction. A collective that prunes practices it cannot ground will delete working know-how, and the feedback that would expose the loss arrives too late to be traced to the change.

The problem is that the steps in this procedure are causally opaque. An individual cannot readily infer their functions into relationships or importance.

Thus, the unwillingness of this mother to take on faith, the practices handed down to her from earlier generations would result in sickness and early death for members of her family. Individual learning does not pay here, and intuitions are misleading.

Often, most or all of the people skilled in deploying such adaptive practices do not understand how or why they work, or even that they do anything at all.
