In implementations, precision over policies is a softmax temperature: the explore/exploit balance is a dial, often set by hand.
The claim
In working active inference agents, precision over policies is a softmax inverse temperature. Mazzaglia and co-authors (2022) give the policy belief as a softmax of negative expected free energy scaled by a precision parameter: high precision picks the lowest-expected-free-energy policy, very low precision explores at random. The balance between exploiting and exploring is therefore a dial, often set by the designer, not something the principle derives.

when precision is high, the agent is most likely to engage in the policy with the lowest expected free energy, whereas for (very) low precision the agent will rather randomly explore
