METR's 2x is closer to a floor: benchmarks are saturated and the evidence of faster growth was redacted.

The claim

The first outside assessment of AI-driven acceleration cannot yet say whether it would have noticed much faster acceleration: the lab's newest model saturates every benchmark used, growth could be speeding up continuously, and the evidence pointing that way was redacted, so its 2x figure is closer to a floor than a ceiling.

Why AI gets harder to steer

Evidence 4 passages

  • groundsSource document

If growth is hyperbolic, we are likely underestimating instantaneous acceleration and substantially understating acceleration in the near future.
  • groundsSource document

While we do not see clear evidence of this in the AECI trends, there is other evidence that makes this seem more plausible which Anthropic redacted.
  • groundsSource document

This lack of benchmarks which are difficult for Model 4 makes us somewhat nervous about our ability to measure AECI now and in the future.
  • groundsSource document

Overall, would the methods used reliably have identified much greater acceleration, if it had occurred?
