Conjecture
Training a model on its own selected work mostly makes routine what it could already do when prompted, rather than adding new skills; so a model's safety-relevant capability is what it does when well prompted, not what it does by default. In Sakana's MASS (2026) the base model delegated work in 110 of 110 runs when told to and 1 of 110 when not; after one self-training cycle it did so unprompted in 48.
