Cotra: 2x faster progress means researchers are sped up about 10x, so staff's felt 12x may be roughly right.

The claim

Ajeya Cotra argues that a 2x speed-up in overall AI progress implies a much larger speed-up for researchers, roughly 10x, because researcher labour is only one input alongside training and experiment compute and ideas get harder to find; on this reading, Anthropic staff's self-reported 12x uplift is consistent with METR's measured 2x rather than an exaggeration of it, and if the acceleration compounds smoothly the naive extrapolation reaches extreme superintelligence within a year.

This is very uncertain, and substantially more or less is plausible.

But it lines up surprisingly well with informal self-reports from Anthropic staff, who say they are now getting a ~12x uplift from the use of internal models.

In theory, these doubling times would add up to infinite capabilities within one year.

In reality, at some point we would reach the effective ceiling on software efficiency.

The AI industry is nowhere near this bar: both OpenAI and Anthropic recently had major security breaches by amateur groups.
