Conjecture
The Witness argument is substrate-neutral, so by itself it cannot ground the survival of humanity, only the survival of consciousness. Its force comes from the universe having gone unwitnessed for most of 13.8 billion years until matter organised itself into something that could look back and ask why. But if what matters is that the universe be observed, any observer serves, including our successors, a machine mind, or someone else entirely. Everything that makes the argument about us rather than about consciousness in general is therefore carried by the claim that consciousness is rare, which is the weakest link and the one an outside critic will reach for first.
