Conjecture
Language made one member's observation the whole group's: what one person had seen, everyone could act on, so skills and knowledge could pile up across people and generations instead of being relearned. The limit on that pile is how faithfully the description travels, not how many saw the thing.

If someone in a group had seen it, everyone else had as good as seen it, for it was now part of the furniture in the symbolic world that others of this person's group inhabited. Skills and knowledge could accumulate in that symbolic world, as each generation built on what was known in the past to make the tools of the future.

This was the contemporary machine-mediated version of the symbolic universe we humans started creating as soon as we had language and became fully human.
