Conjecture

An idea reaches the mainstream only after the first 15% or so adopt it on belief, because the majority waits for others to go first.

The claim

Adoption of a new product or idea runs through innovators and early adopters, who decide on what they believe about the world, before the early majority, who will not try something until someone else has. So an organisation that wants mass acceptance must first win the people who share its belief, and leading with features aims at the majority before they are ready to listen. The waiting-for-others part is well supported. The rest is weaker: the adopter categories are defined by standard deviations from the mean adoption time, so the 2.5% and 13.5% are arithmetic, not findings, and a tipping point at 15 to 18% penetration is asserted rather than shown.

As the law states, the first two and a half percent of the population are the innovators, and the next 13 and a half percent of the population are our early adopters.

TiVo did not start with why. They ignored the left side of the curve and completely failed to find the tipping point.

That 15 to 18 percent is not made up of people who are simply willing to buy the product.
