Modernity bought individuality by dissolving the structures that held people, and Part I is explicit that this was a transaction rather than a drift. Harari's frame: before the Industrial Revolution the daily life of most humans ran its course within the nuclear family, the extended family and the local intimate community. Those traditional power structures had little tolerance for outside intervention and therefore stood in the way of the market and the nation, so the market and the state broke them by offering people the chance to become individuals. The resulting rise in individuality has sharply reduced the influence of family and local community in daily life. This is the third commons institution in the manuscript dissolved by something that gained from dissolving it, and here Part I names the buyer.
