The failure mode Bostrom names for a capable and unwise collective is the one Gaddis names for Xerxes and Pericles: a short explosive growth spurt ending in collapse. Two literatures with no shared vocabulary describe the same object, which is an expansion that cannot detect its own culminating point. This makes the generalisation question strategic rather than technical, because the thing that stops a generalising collective is not the next capability but the signal that says stop, and that signal sits in the environment the expansion stops reading first.
