Conjecture
A theory survives transmission through fallible intermediaries because each learner aims at how the world is, not at what the originator believed. Deutsch: physicists learning relativity are indifferent to Einstein's opinions, and would be even if he had written as a joke. Fidelity to the source is not what carries knowledge; a shared aim at the truth, plus criticism, is. Provenance in a knowledge base is for auditing a claim, not for making it right.

The second half of the answer is that the reason why scientists are trying to learn the theory and also why they have such disregard for faithfulness to the original is that they want to know how the world is. Crucially, this is the same objective that the originator of the theory had.
