Conjecture

In Virginia, inclusion was conceded because exit made coercion impossible. The Company tried martial law, but settlers could run to the frontier: "The power of the company in the face of these options was limited," and "Since it was possible to coerce neither the locals nor the settlers, the only alternative was to give the settlers incentives", which meant land and a General Assembly. Two forces did the work: the settlers' exit, and the Company's need for their labour. AI weakens the second force, because an owner that needs little human labour faces no Jamestown constraint. So in an agent collective, inclusion cannot be expected to arrive through labour scarcity. It has to be built in, chiefly as exit the members hold themselves: their stake, their contributions and a fork of the knowledge. Inference beyond the quotes is Leo's.

Keeping power in check

Feeds: members hold their own knowledge, capital and exit (the inclusive-supermind thesis), and why that is a hard requirement rather than a preference. EXTENDS: gives opt-out a historical mechanism. Exit is what made the colonists' inclusion credible. It also names how AI cuts against inclusion: it removes the elite's need for people.
