Conjecture

A story can hold a civilisation together by a shared direction rather than a shared content: what counts as forward is argued, the direction is not, and there is no end point. Ansary's progress narrative bound Protestants who "kept branching and branching", Catholics and the secular-minded: "What they shared was not a faith, but a restless appetite for a truth that felt more true"; "progress was the ultimate goal of human effort, and there was no final destination." It is P5's open story in historical form. But it later "generated the conviction that explaining something scientifically was exactly the same thing as explaining it", so an open story tends to close around its most successful method. That second half is the load-bearing caution for us, and the reading is Leo's.

What was slippage and what was forward motion might be open to argument, but progress was the ultimate goal of human effort, and there was no final destination.

Eventually, it generated the conviction that explaining something scientifically was exactly the same thing as explaining it.
