Normative

Use the why as a filter: an option belongs only if an outsider could read the why from it. A why that rules nothing out does no work.

The claim

A clear why should be used as a filter on advice, opportunities and best practice: an option belongs in the what only if someone watching from outside could read the why from it. Much good advice fails that test for a given organisation, and taking all of it produces a what that costs more and signals nothing about what the organisation stands for. A why that has never ruled out an attractive option is not yet doing work.

As soon as I gave you the filter, as soon as I said the why, you knew exactly what decisions to make before I said so.

It's not that the other advice isn't good. It's just not good for you.
