Conjecture
A network that distributes wealth through a society can be turned by a single rich outside counterparty: its best-placed brokers become that counterparty's clients, and the flow reverses. Ansary's ch. 21: "Patronage networks had been a mechanism for distributing wealth throughout society. Trade with European corporations distorted this mechanism by generating an elite ever more closely associated with the foreign traders than with their own masses"; "what was good for the foreign traders wasn't necessarily good for the Indian masses"; the wealth "pooled up with a few and then seeped back to Europe." Clay's step: a contribution system whose leading contributors are rewarded mainly by an external platform will route value to that platform, so credit has to be paid by the community the contribution serves.
