Conjecture
A record of the artifacts does not preserve the knowhow. The Impossible Project held Polaroid's plant, equipment and a dozen of its best workers and still could not make good film for years, because some of the knowledge, including discontinued supplier chemistry, was gone. This is an objection we have to answer: a public, correctable record preserves knowledge, but it does not preserve the practice that turns knowledge into capability, which survives only through use.
