Conjecture
Forgetting can be a precondition for architectural learning. IBM built the PC by putting twelve engineers in Boca Raton, far from the mainframe headquarters, using outside components. This qualifies the claim that a collective learns best by never forgetting. An append-only record keeps the old architecture present, so a collective also needs places to work where the old record does not set the defaults.
