Conjecture
Conditional independence across a Markov blanket gives a well-defined statistical separation between the inside and outside of any system.
The claim
Ramstead, Badcock and Friston (2018) hold that once a Markov blanket's conditional independencies are in place, there is a well-defined statistical separation between the internal and external states of any system, which is what lets the principle say what a living thing is.

With these conditional independencies in place, we now have a well-defined (statistical) separation between the internal and external states of any system.

T=below L=35 above=The 2023 formulation says a system's blanket independencies follow from its sparse coupling; the 2021 counterexamples say sparse coupling alone does not give them. below=none | rejected as stated: the literature uses two inequivalent blanket conditions (C-9GHWZ6CCE3) and under the 2019 assumptions the sensory/active labels lose meaning (C-JXNTMBCT55); "well-defined for any system" overstates. I keep blankets as a modelling device.
