The book's closing chapter credits the averted nuclear war to incentives and correction machinery, not to stories, and its ask of the unpersuaded is a correctability ask. Centuries of visionaries told "undisputed stories about the human cost of wars": "They said, please stop. But the wars did not stop." What changed was that "everyone who had the power to choose war expected to personally have a bad time if one broke out," backed by "arms agreements and monitors" and a direct line. Its fallback for a politician not yet persuaded is "please at least make it possible for humanity to slam on the brakes later." Even mass public voice "would not itself prevent the disaster." This supports the correctable half of our argument in the authors' own words, and it is the null case against the claim that stories move what a society builds: here the story supplies only the expectation, and the incentive and the machinery do the work. Our counter-story's job is therefore narrower than recruitment: make the personal stake visible to the people who hold the brakes, and keep the brakes reachable.
