Conjecture
Without error correction all information processing, and so all knowledge creation, is bounded, because errors accumulate per step. Error correction that stays unbounded over arbitrarily many steps needs a digital representation: analog feedback (homeostasis, thermostats) holds continuous variables within bounds, but only discrete values let an erroneous value be told apart from a correct one exactly, which is why every jump to universality (computers, alphabets, speech, the genetic code) happens in digital systems.

Without error correction, all information processing, and hence all knowledge creation, is necessarily bounded. Error correction is the beginning of infinity.

Because of the necessity of error correction, all jumps to universality occur in digital systems.
