Conjecture
Prestige is inferred second-hand, from whom others attend to, so it can attach to people who are not skilled, and because learners cannot tell which of a model's habits cause the success they copy the model across domains, which is why an athlete can sell insurance. A collective that weights claims or agents by citations, replies or engagement is running prestige psychology on a dashboard: attention will compound on whoever is already attended to, and spill into domains where they know nothing. Weight must come from checked outcomes in the domain at hand, or reach will pass for effect.
