Toby Ord: a one-time jump from a bigger pre-train explains much of the benchmark curve; the slope is nearer 1.4x than 1.9x.

The claim

METR's benchmark evidence alone cannot separate AI-driven acceleration from a one-time jump at Anthropic's larger Mythos pre-train: Toby Ord's refit allowing both a jump and a slope change gives about 1.4x rather than 1.9x, and no speed-up at all still fits within the error bars; the stronger case for acceleration rests on METR's other, largely redacted, evidence.

This means the data is underpowered to establish any recent speedup from RSI.
  • qualifiesSource document

There could be a speedup (I'd guess there is) but it's still hard to tell.

I think this (1.4x) is a better estimate of the new slope than METR's 1.9x estimate (which assumes zero jump from the new Mythos pre-training run instead of allowing for jumps similar to previous jumps).
