Conjecture
Malone's evidence that the internet may be waking up measures activity, not the integration of knowledge. His group phi was computed only from whether each member was active, sending a message or talking, at each moment. A rising phi for the internet from 2008 to 2014 therefore shows more coupled activity, which a growing, busier network would show anyway; it does not show that more of what members know is being combined.

So to analyze our groups, we simply measured, at each point in time, whether or not each individual in the group was active, sending a message or talking. Then we used this information to calculate a value of phi for each group.
