Conjecture
Earth's biosphere has never supported humans unaided: even the first people at Oxford's latitude survived only because they carried culturally transmitted knowledge of tools, weapons, fire and clothing. So what humanity depends on is knowledge carried in people as much as the planet, and the Spaceship Earth picture of a ready-made life-support system we can only damage misdescribes the past.
