Anthropic's founding bet, as reported: AI is dangerous, so only the careful should build it. Shared oversight was the objection from the start.

The claim

As the New York Times reports it, Dario Amodei's founding conviction joined two ideas: AI could be extremely dangerous, and only he and like-minded technologists should be trusted to build it. The objection was raised early: in 2018 an OpenAI researcher argued that oversight of AI should be shared among people with differing viewpoints.
