Conjecture
Whoever is the only party in contact with both ends of a chain of work takes control of it, and the workers at the producing end become invisible in the record. Ansary's ch. 18 on putting-out: merchants "found markets, took orders, and contracted to have the products manufactured"; "In this emerging system, producers and consumers never met. The merchants were the only people in contact with both ends, so they gained control of the whole production process." They "supplied patterns, delivered raw materials, specified quantities, and dictated designs," and because the work was done at home, "women's contributions to the economy were hidden from public view." Clay's step: in a contributor system the interface that sees both the contributor and the audience (the platform, the agent, the editor) is the merchant; credit has to be routed to the producing end on purpose, or it pools where both ends meet.
