Conjecture

Values hold only when rewards and accountability run through them; a shared, controllable, all-or-nothing bonus points everyone one way.

The claim

Stated values hold only when rewards and accountability are tied to them; written on a wall they are passive, and trust decays. The case offered: a failing airline paid every employee the same small monthly bonus whenever its on-time ranking reached the top five, sent as a separate cheque, measured on what employees could control, and won or lost by everyone together. The bonus cost less than lateness did and pointed tens of thousands of people at one target.

It's not enough to just write them on the wall. That's passive. Bonuses and incentives must revolve around them.

We measured the things that employees could truly control, Bethune said. We made the stakes something the employees would win or lose on together, not separately.
