Conjecture
Volume makes a message heard, not understood; a sponsor with no known cause sees the attention go to whoever's cause it fits.
The claim
Volume spreads a message but cannot supply the cause it serves. Money and stunts make a message heard; if the audience does not already know what the sender stands for, the attention attaches to whatever it fits, or to nothing. The case offered: a carmaker donated several hundred cars to a television audience, and the event was remembered as the host's generosity, which everyone already knew, while few remembered the carmaker. Amplification comes second; without a clear cause it adds clutter.
