Conjecture

Process Power's time lag comes from complexity and opacity; Toyota itself needed 15 years to transfer its system to suppliers

The claim

The hysteresis behind Process Power has two sources: complexity, since improvements touch many parts of long production and logistics chains, and opacity, since the system was built bottom up by trial and error, largely tacit and never fully codified. Even Toyota took 15 years to transfer its production system to its own suppliers.

This inherent speed limit in achieving the benefit results from two factors.
  • groundsSource document

It took fully 15 years for instance, before they were able to transfer TPS to their suppliers.
