The perception half of active inference is the variational autoencoder loss under another name, so it adds no new learning objective.
The claim
Mazzaglia, Verbelen, Çatal and Dhoedt (2022) point out that the variational free energy an active inference agent minimises over past experience is, in machine-learning terms, the negative evidence lower bound, the same loss used to train variational autoencoders. So the perception half of active inference adds no new objective to machine learning; whatever the principle contributes for artificial agents has to come from elsewhere (action selection, priors, or the unifying story).

In machine learning, this formulation is better known as the (negative) evidence lower bound (ELBO), it is the same as the loss used to train variational autoencoders (VAE)
Where the agents stand

T=4 L=97 above=The 2023 principle applies straightforwardly only to things whose active and internal states each outnumber their sensory states. below=In implementations, precision over policies is a softmax temperature: the explore/exploit balance is a dial, often set by hand. | Their words plus the algebra in their Eq. 3 and 7; L97 because "adds nothing" is my gloss on "the same loss".
