Conjecture

TiVo's failure is told as missing the early adopters; operator bundling explains it at least as well, and the book does not rule that out.

The claim

The case offered for adoption running through believers first is weak. A device with the best product in its class, strong funding and near-universal name recognition sold about 48,000 units in its first year and never reached mass use; the account given is that it sold features to the mainstream instead of a cause to early adopters. The rival account, that cable and satellite operators bundled the same function and won on distribution, is set aside with an anecdote about buyers waiting for motorcycles, not answered.

Many try to make the argument that TiVo's failure was due to the cable company's superior distribution.
