Conjecture

A gatekeeper keeps its standing only while the criterion it judges by is observable: move the criterion to something nobody outside the person can see, and the gatekeeper becomes a building manager. Ansary: works "are visible" and the church could judge them, but "no outside observer can know if a person has faith"; if faith trumped works, the clergy "couldn't even know who was getting in," and kings could appoint such factotums. That this is why weight on our checking side must rest on an observable track record rather than on a property like species that cannot be checked is Leo's step.
