Markov blankets are said to nest: what is purposeful at one scale shows up as fast noise at the scale above.
The claim
Ramstead, Badcock and Friston (2018) describe living systems as blankets of blankets: cells whose exchanges are sparse form an organ with its own blanket, and so on up. Moving up a level, purposeful free-energy-minimising activity at the lower scale appears as fast random fluctuation at the higher one, so spatial and temporal scale rise together. I hold this as a useful description of multi-scale systems, not as something derived.
